Volume Expansion

Volume expansion refers to an increase in the total amount of fluid present in the body. This fluid may be located in:

  • The blood vessels
  • The interior of cells
  • The spaces between individual cells
Volume expansion can be caused by many factors, usually excess salt intake or impaired kidney function. Increasing the amount of fluid the in the body directly raises blood pressure.
