Definition:

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is secreted by the parathyroid glands. Its job is to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphorous available in the blood.

In general, parathyroid hormone:

  • Raises the level of calcium in the blood
  • Decreases the level of phosphorous in the blood
  • Increases the amount of active vitamin D available in the body

Parathyroid hormone is closely linked to vitamin D, and both of these substances likely play a role in the long-term regulation of blood pressure.
