Definition: An abnormally high amount of potassium in the blood, as detected by a simple blood test. Hyperkalemia has a number of potential causes, including:
- Kidney failure
- Red blood cell destruction
- Respiratory problems (respiratory acidosis)
- Hormone imbalance (hypoaldosteronism)
- Excessive Dietary Intake (Suppliments & Vitamin Pills)
Typically, a normal potassium level is around 4.0 mEq/L (milliequivalents per liter).
Hyperkalemia is a serious problem and should be aggressively managed.
