Hyperkalemia

Definition: An abnormally high amount of potassium in the blood, as detected by a simple blood test. Hyperkalemia has a number of potential causes, including:
  • Kidney failure
  • Red blood cell destruction
  • Respiratory problems (respiratory acidosis)
  • Hormone imbalance (hypoaldosteronism)
  • Excessive Dietary Intake (Suppliments & Vitamin Pills)

Typically, a normal potassium level is around 4.0 mEq/L (milliequivalents per liter).

Hyperkalemia is a serious problem and should be aggressively managed.
