Definition: Special type of protein molecule that processes specific messages carried by the central nervous system and various hormones. Beta receptors are located at many places in the body, but are found in very high numbers in the heart and blood vessels, where they work to increase blood pressure when stimulated. This makes them attractive targets for high blood pressure treatment.
