FDA to Consider Reducing Salt in Restaurant Foods
The American Medical Association, responding to data that shows most Americans eat more than twice the daily recommended allowance of sodium, recently called upon fast food and chain restaurants to reduce the salt in their food by 50%.
In response the FDA, which governs food laws in the United States, has decided to meet with representatives of the American Medical Association to open a dialog about pursuing options for making the reductions a reality.
The FDA currently recommends a maximum of 2,300mg of salt per day, which is about one level teaspoon. A single meal at most fast food and chain restaurants can easily contain more than 2,300mg of salt.
