FDA to Consider Avalide as First Line High Blood Pressure Treatment

Tuesday April 17, 2007

Avalide, a combination drug currently used as a second line treatment for resistant hypertension or very severe hypertension, will be reviewed by the FDA to assess its potential as a first line treatment.

Avalide is a single pill that actually contains two different drugs - an angiotensin receptor blocker called irbesartan, and a common diuretic called hydrochlorothiazide. It is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb, who also submitted the current review request to the FDA. Avalide is not currently available in generic form.
