Hot Flashes Linked to High Blood Pressure

From Craig Weber, M.D., About.com GuideApril 3, 2007

According to new research out of the Cornell Medical Center, women who experience hot flashes tend to have higher blood pressure than women who don't experience hot flashes. This link remains even after the data is adjusted to consider whether woman are premenopausal, menopausal, or postmenopausal.

While previous research has linked menopause to high blood pressure this may be the first to link high blood pressure specificially to hot flashes.

Interestingly enough, when I was first diagnosed with hypertension, I mentioned that I’d been having hot flashes. Every doctor I mentioned this to dismissed any possible connection outright. It just goes to show that patients can’t relay on their General Practitioner to know everything.
