Exercise Boosts Memory Power

Wednesday March 14, 2007

Scientists at Columbia Medical Center have discovered that regular exercise not only promotes heart health and helps maintain ideal body weight, it also boosts memory power and memory longevity.

Exercise stimulates a very specific part of the brain that becomes increasingly involved in memory as we age, meaning that the benefits are magnified as we get older.

Using a specially designed Magnetic Resonance Imaging technique, the researches observed the formation of new neural connections for the first time, and found their rate to be stimulated by physical activity, especially in memory-centric areas of the brain.

Dr. Scott Small, one of the lead researchers, comments, "I, like many physicians, already encourage my patients to get active, and this adds yet another reason to the long list of reasons why exercise is good for overall health."
