Low Blood Pressure + Kidney Disease = High Risk of Stroke!

While high blood pressure is a well established and long recognized risk factor for stroke, research to be published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology has revealed that low blood pressure, in the setting of chronic kidney disease, also greatly increases stroke risk.

Dr. Daniel E. Weiner of the Tufts University School of Medicine and the New England Medical Center says,"...we found that individuals with the lowest systolic blood pressures and moderate kidney disease are also at risk of stroke - even compared to...patients with slightly higher blood pressure."

Also interesting is the fact that this increased risk profile seems to be even stronger in patients for whom the low blood pressure is actually a result of treatment for high blood pressure.

More research is planned which will further examine these links. No treatment guidelines will be changed until further evidence is available and verified.
