Only 2% of American Adolescents Meet Standard Exercise and Diet Guidelines

Tuesday February 6, 2007

Collaborative research between scientists at the University of California, in San Diego, and Basque Health Service-Osakidetza, in Bilbao, Spain, has shown startling and alarming new trends regarding the health of America's younger population.

Examining several behavioral aspects related to diet and exercise, the researchers found that a mere 2% of American adolescents meet recommended and dietary goals. The vast majority of teens and preteens, on the other hand, fail to meet standard guidelines such as:

  • Recommended Intake of Fruits and Vegetables
  • Proper Restriction of Calories Coming from Fats
  • Adequate Daily Physical Activity

A direct result of this substandard diet and exercise attitude is the increasing incidence of obesity and other health problems among increasingly younger populations. Problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, and even heart disease - which have all traditionally been regarded primarily as problems of old age - are increasing dramatically in young people. These increases are expected to place extreme stress on the US healthcare system, which will need to be strengthened in order to meet the anticipated demand for services.
