Super Bowl Excitement May be Dangerous for Some Fans

Thursday February 1, 2007

For some people, the excitement and anxiety of the Super Bowl may be too much for their cardiovascular system to handle. This risk is especially great in those with a history of high blood pressure or previous heart attacks.

According to Dr. David Seaberg, professor and chairman of emergency medicine at the University of Florida, "A football game that lasts several hours may cause several [negative] physiological responses to occur...people who have had strokes or high blood pressure have to be careful.

Strengthening this opinion is a study conducted by researchers from Switzerland, who found that there was a 60% increase in the rate of fatal heart attacks following the World Cup.
